Sprinkler malfunctions seem to happen when you least expect, but you can prepare yourself by simply knowing what to do when one occurs. First and foremost, it’s important to turn off the water to the leaking irrigation system. To do this, you must determine whether your home uses a double check or RPZ backflow device.
A double check backflow device can be identified by a green lid near your water meter around 12×18″ in size. In most cases, the double check will be located within 10 feet of the home’s water meter. Once you find it, take off the lid and turn one of the two handles 90 degrees to the right. This will prevent water from entering your sprinkler system.
If you have an above ground RPZ backflow device, it would be found near the water meter or on the side of the home. If the RPZ is not near the water meter, it will most likely be on the on the same side of the house that your water meter is closet to. Once you find the RPZ, turn one of the two handles 90 degrees to the right. This will prevent water from entering your sprinkler system.
If the system is not leaking or the situation is controlled, you can set up an appointment with one of our licensed irrigators to resolve your issue.
